  ⭐ 1-Star Review – Helm Construction I am extremely disappointed with our experience with Helm Construction and feel it is important to share what happened so other homeowners can make an informed decision. We hired Helm Construction in September 2025 to perform roofing and siding work at our Lancaster home. The primary reason for the roofing work was to address an existing water-intrusion problem. Our signed proposal specifically included roof replacement and installation of new flashing, including counter flashing, step flashing, and wall flashing, as well as a 20-year workmanship warranty. Unfortunately, the project was not completed as agreed. The flashing was not properly completed, which is particularly concerning because correcting the water intrusion was the reason we hired the company. As a result, we experienced another water intrusion and additional damage to our home. We also discovered a serious concern with the shingles installed. The shingles were not appropriate for the pitch of our roof, and we have had to obtain professional estimates for the work necessary to properly correct the installation. Other work was left unfinished as well. Helm left broken exterior lights behind, and there was an agreement for Helm to install soffit at no additional charge. We have email communications documenting that agreement, but the soffit was never completed. We also have serious concerns regarding permitting and inspections. Based on the information and records available to us, we have concerns about whether the appropriate permits were obtained and whether required inspections were completed. We are also aware of concerns involving permitting and stop-work activity associated with construction projects in Lancaster City. The minute we began questioning these issues, communication stopped.   I hired this roofer to replace my roof and unfortunately had a very serious experience. After the roof was installed, I experienced significant water intrusion that resulted in extensive damage throughout three levels of my home. I contacted the roofer about the problem and was told that he would take care of the necessary repairs, but only if I removed my negative Yelp review. I relied on that promise, removed the review, and he subsequently repaired only one portion of the roof and stopped responding regarding the remaining damage. Because the damage could not be resolved through the roofer, I ultimately had to file a claim through my homeowners insurance and have the resulting repairs addressed through insurance. My insurance company attempted to pursue subrogation against the roofer but was unable to do so; I was informed that he did not have insurance available to cover the claim and that he did not respond to their attempts to contact him. I am now experiencing dampness in another area of the home whenever it rains and have been trying for months to get the roofer to come back and investigate the problem. Despite repeated attempts to contact him, I have not received a response. My experience was not simply that I was unhappy with the workmanship. I was left dealing with substantial water damage, extensive repairs, an insurance claim, and an unresolved moisture problem after the contractor stopped communicating with me. I am posting this review so other homeowners can make an informed decision before hiring this contractor. I strongly recommend getting everything in writing, verifying the contractor’s Pennsylvania registration and insurance, and not relying on verbal promises to correct problems after the work is completed.

  BUYER BEWARE: I can certainly say that you do not want to hire this company. I know Cody personally and put my trust in him to replace my roof professionally and correctly, but him and his crew clearly do not seem to know what they’re doing and I regret using them. Other professionals I’ve spoken and consulted with can attest to the horrendous quality of business and poor install I received on my roof. To begin, communication was horrible, including the fact that I had to ask repeatedly when my project was scheduled all the way up until the week that they told me it would be done two months ago. I was also told less than 12 hours prior to the scheduled install date that the shingle style I chose was discontinued. How was I not notified when I picked it a month ago? I looked past it hoping everything else would go smoothly. The day of the install, I was told a foreman would be present. But whoever the foreman was, he clearly didn’t seem to inspect anything. I couldn’t ask questions during the install because no one doing the install spoke fluent English, which would have been fine as long as I was at least updated and a could know what was going on through the process and hear my input. After the crew left the install, dozens of screws, nails, trash, cigarette butts, and tools were found by me, some are pictured in my attached images. One of my visitors even had one screw damage his tire because of it. How do you leave a job like that? I hired two separate contractors to inspect the work done after completion and both have many concerns, especially with the way the metal portion of my roof was installed. My concerns started with me noticing areas of poor workmanship across the board; shingles completely missing nails, exposed nails, bent and damaged flashing, missing flashing, sloppy caulk jobs, smashed ridge vent, missing gutter guards, crooked chimney flashing, and other damage to my roof that hadn’t been there prior.   I would like to take a second to tell the complete story to this. After the roof install was completed, we were to be coming back the next day to do our final clean up as it had gotten dark the day before. Mr. Phelan got to alot of the cleanup before we had a chance to finish as evidenced in one of his pictures. Regarding the screw in the tire, once I was notified I immediately offered to pay for it and make it right. I was told "it was no big deal because it did not puncture". When we complete a roof, we very commonly walk through a job with the homeowner to make sure everything is perfect and there was a few punchlist items that we immediately corrected. Mr. Phelan was verbally satisfied at that point and paid his remaining balance and I gave him a discount for his inconvenience. Then, just a few days ago, he informed me he thinks he has a small leak on his exterior carport metal roof. We agreed to meet Monday (today) to get this diagnosed and handled per our warranty. He emails me a demand letter on Sunday night demanding I sign and refund him $3500 or he was going to take me to court. After explaining that he has a warranty and we would certainly take care of this as discussed just a couple days prior he finally brought his "Demand" down to $1,000 refund and I still come fix the issue. I told him that I was not willing to do that and finally he agreed at 10:30PM sunday evening to allow me to come take care of this warranty issue. I arrived today around 10am and upon inspecting the leak alongside Mr. Phelan it was discovered his wood siding was rotten which was allowing water to get behind the metal roof and appear that the metal roof is leaking. Although I could of charged him a service charge, I decided instead to go out and buy housewrap and get his rotten siding temporarily water tight free of charge. Once that was complete, we sprayed a hose on the metal roof while he was there to show him that when raining it would not leak. I had thought Mr. Phelan appreci

  Would not recommend this company I had an appointment set up they never showed up to give me an estimate if they don't show up for an estimate they may not show up to get your roof done don't give any money to them

  They came to put a new roof on my mom's roof. I paid for it. They didn't fix the problem by my mom's door, the edging looked unfinished, and they didn't clean up their whole mess when they left. They never made sure all the nails were picked up and now my 2 year old grandson has stepped on one of those nails they failed to clean up and it completely punctured his foot and had to be rushed to urgent care. When we tried to reach out to them about our complaints, they will not return any of our phone calls. I would not suggest them as a good roofing company when they have the poorest customer service I have ever experienced and I work in a customer service roll for a living. I hope this helps you make your decision easier.

  Thought the install was to fast and as 25+ years as a contractor in general construction fast is not always a good thing , a few months after install I was on the roof doing Christmas lights saw a few thing that are the simplest things not to do on a roof ! Sloppy and not craftsmans butt shingles and exposed nails . Cody did respond very quickly but never said when they would be out as I wanted to be there . Showed up a week later no call or anything to say the roof was fixed terrible communication. Left trash as well.

  Called and requested a quote for a porch roof on my house. They came out and looked it over with my contractor. I waited a few days to receive the quote, after not hearing from them I called and left a voice mail asking if they had gotten it together yet. No reply, I emailed them asking, no answer. I texted them on the phone they texted me on to make the appointment, no answer. Finally I called and left a voice mail and someone reached via text saying they missed my call and how could they help, I then explained via text that I am expecting a quote for my porch roof since someone came out and looked it over. Still haven't heard anything back from them. It's been about 2 weeks and I have moved on to a different company. I can't comment on their quality of their work but I can they lack communication skills.

  Edit- while everything I stated did happen and was put lightly, they have continued to fix the bad workmanship. I feel for the owner as like I said he seems like a good guy maybe just needs to hire better. There is bad, and then there is horrible. This has been an eight-month nightmare with a rental property we own. A project that was supposed to be completed in January is still unfinished. I was repeatedly assured that the remaining issues would be addressed, including missing plywood behind the newly installed siding, gutters that are falling off, and multiple leaks in the brand-new roof they installed. To make matters worse, this is one half of a duplex, and their work has caused even more leaks for the neighboring property. This is just the start of the poor quality of work. The owner seems like an honest, hardworking person, but unfortunately, I don't believe he has the support staff or project management needed to deliver on the commitments that were made. These delays have cost us tens of thousands of dollars because we have been unable to complete the interior renovations while waiting for the exterior work to be finished correctly. At this point, I have no choice but to pursue legal action and file a complaint with the Attorney General. I cannot recommend this company based on my experience.

  Nic, we spoke about this on Tuesday the 30th. It has been 110 degrees or raining since. I will get the downspout fastened and the siding concern handled tomorrow July 10th.

  We did the mandatory get three estimates and Helm was definitely lower with a better guarantee. That's what really drew us to them. The weather was not very cooperative when the guys were doing the roof and the gutters, and sometimes communication was not as much as I would have preferred. The owner contacted us personally and handled any type of questions that we had. The guys did a great job and we love love love our roof and gutters! Clean up was wonderful!

  From the sales process to the final product we couldn’t be more pleased with the job done. The crew showed up literally to the minute of what was scheduled. Roof was off and on in a day on one of the hottest days of the year. Clean up was very thorough. There was a miscommunication on my end regarding disposal and the foreman quickly fixed the problem, going out of his way to make it happen. I would not hesitate to have them back again.

  I got my roof redone a couple of months ago back in January and hadn't gotten to writing a review at the time. Months later and it's still solid. Excellent work and customer service. Leon made sure the site was clean and even followed up with me in person since I couldn't be there at the time the job was done. Ill be looking to them for future work.
