I rarely write reviews, and this is my first negative one. Unfortunately, the service we received for our roof replacement fell well below expectations for a highly rated local company. Like many roofing companies, they used subcontractors, which is not unusual. However, there appeared to be little oversight or accountability. The subcontractor crew had a manager, and the company had its own on-site manager, but during the three-day project they were rarely present at the same time, leaving the job largely unsupervised. At the end of the first day, cleanup was inadequate. The crew only addressed the main entry area after I insisted they do so before leaving. What I later discovered was more concerning—shingles were dragged across our Trex decking using thin tarps, resulting in multiple gouges approximately 6–10 inches long. The company (JMR) has not accepted responsibility for the damage to the Trex decking. Additionally, the chimney flashing work was done poorly and will need to be corrected by another contractor at our expense. Based on this experience, I would not recommend using this company.

Hi Joey, We take reviews seriously, so thank you for taking the time to provide your perspective on how this project went for your parents. We do want to clarify several points to ensure an accurate understanding of this project. First, we apologize that your experience with JMR was less than you expected. We do our best to communicate expectations about the process. Some of what you described is part of the common process of completing a project like this. This was a large, steep roof replacement (approximately 45 squares), which requires more time, safety precautions, and coordination than a standard walkable roof. As outlined in our pre-project documentation, multi-day projects involve ongoing work and cleanup, with full site cleanup completed at the end of the project—not after the first day. Throughout the project, we had dedicated crew members actively managing debris and maintaining the property, including working until dark. Expectations of complete cleanup during an active tear-off phase are not consistent with standard roofing practices for a project of this size and complexity. Having your beautiful Trex damaged is regrettable. While we do tarp everything, a large and steep roof such as this one produces a lot of trash during the tear-off process and due to the steepness, the trash/shingles fall hard and fast. Our project manager apologized and addressed this directly on-site and offered a solution at the time. We were told it was not a concern. We cannot resolve issues that are declined in the moment and later presented differently. For the chimney flashing, the existing step flashing behind the masonry was inspected and found to be in good condition. New counter-flashing was installed properly and remains fully covered under our workmanship warranty. We stand behind this work. If you would like to submit an evaluation from your other contractor we would be happy to consider his opinion on our workmanship. We also want to clarify that while w

They subcontract the work, a group of men from Greenville are the ones who came and did our roof. There was no one who was from Mcclung that was there, other than the foreman. The foreman was only there for about two hours during the two day process. The foreman then came out two weeks later to put up some flashing the forgot to put up.

Hey Dana, thank you for your review. We are slightly confused as we don't show you as a customer in our system, though we did replace a roof for your mom and are aware that you were present for some of that project. Our records show that you were disgruntled about not being consulted on the project. We hope you understand that our policy is to communicate and receive direction primarily with the homeowner we have contracted with or their designated representative, which in this case was not you. In response to what you mentioned, yes. We do use subcontractors for some of our labor for roof installations. You'll find that nearly 100% of all roofing companies use subcontractors. This is a very common practice. That said, we also train our subcontractors on our removal and installation process and our project manager oversees each job. At the end of each project, he does a walkthrough to make sure anything missed gets handled. Which, as you mentioned, he did. (Also just to note, we have very great, long-standing relationships with our workforce. Our turnover rate is very low.) In regards to the length of time our project manager spent at this particular job, it's actually a good sign if he doesn't have to be there the whole time. It means things are going according to plan! The project manager oversees multiple jobs at the same time and allocates his time to the biggest needs of the day. We are sorry if the assumption was that he would be there all day, but we have highly skilled, competent installers on the roof who do not need to be micromanaged to get the job done properly. Our project manager is available to communicate with the customer what to expect (which he did), ensure that things go according to plan, bring extra materials when needed, inspect the completion of the job, and address any loose ends before collecting the check from the customer. It is simply not the best use of his/our time to watch capable men doing their jobs all day at only one of our job

This was a horrible experience. We found McClung roofing not only provided a terrible work product, but they then went out of their way to hide their numerous errors. In the past week we have talked to two other families who have had an experience similar to us. Rather than working with an Asheville-based crew, the people who did our roof were all from Texas. Anyone choosing McClung has to have his head examined.

    Reply from the business

Hey Joe! We apologize, but we don't have record of your name in our system, so we are unable to look up your job to see what might have gone wrong. We aim to be as transparent as possible in every aspect and don't try to hide errors, but when made, try to fix them. We did have another roofer bring a crew up from Texas after Hurricane Helene to assist us in meeting the significant demand of projects that were incurred after Helene destroyed so many homes. They were with us for a few months and returned back to Texas, but we still honor the warranties on those jobs. All of our shingle roof replacements are covered under shingle and labor warranties, so if there are any issues, we're always more than happy to take a look and address anything that may have gone wrong. We're not perfect, but we do walk with integrity and own our mistakes and make every effort to correct them. If there is anything we can do for you, or these two other unnamed families, we appreciate you giving us a call to let us know how we could make things right. Our number is 828-582-4165

I hired them to fix my roof at the chimney. I assumed they were professionals and knew what they were doing. Huge mistake on my part. Within a couple of years, I had leaks again due to their poor design and work. In addition, the work was extremely sloppy. When I contacted them, the response was essentially....sorry. Don't make the mistake I did, do your homework.

Mr. Mayson, I'm sorry you are dissatisfied with your experience with our company. You called on 7/1/2019 to make an appointment, which we set for the following day. Below is the timeline for your entire project. Our office records every single interaction with every customer, and you have NOT contacted us since 10/14/19 when you paid your balance that was 3 months overdue. We give a 1-year warranty on repair work such as this, and clearly you had every opportunity to have a joint inspection with us with your two cancelled appointments to do just that, and to inspect it by yourself upon your return from South Carolina. I’m sorry you’re just now dissatisfied with our performance, but we tried very hard to accommodate meeting you for an inspection, only to get a cancellation from you each time. We also understood that you would be inspecting it upon your return from South Carolina by yourself and would be contacting us with any complaints. In the absence of any complaints in the years following the work, any reasonable conclusion would be that you were satisfied with the work performed. I'm very sorry you feel that way. Our records go back at least 10 years, and our incoming calls go back 4 years. I don't find any record of doing work for you or even a call from anyone by your name. If we did work for you in another name, please reach out to us so we can make right whatever has caused you to have such a negative view of our company. We always strive for excellence, and if we failed you, we want to know! Thank you!

Dishonest Roofer. Save yourself time, grief, and damage to your home. Hire some other roofer. Did not do the repairs that were contracted. Came back out when I complained but NEVER did fix the leak or do the repairs properly. The last time I complained he stood me up all together. Contracted new plywood not laid until after I complained. Contracted new pipeboots not installed until after I complained. Old rotten plywood not replaced. Shingles not installed correctly. Nails through shingles. No caulking in spite of half a dozen trips out to caulk. They cost me thousands in floor and wall damage, and injuries from the floor damage when I fell through the floor from the water damage. Terrible service!

    Reply from the business

There are two sides to every situation. You never allowed our repairmen in the house to properly pinpoint the leak areas. You mentioned that you had other moisture issues in your crawl space that you were having evaluated as well, so it's quite possible that your flooring issues had nothing to do with your roof. You mentioned on July 12th that you were in the process of having your floors re-done and didn't want them ruined by the leaks. It would take a very long time for a roof leak to cause recently replaced floors to collapse. We did not stand you up, in fact, you stood us up, as our repairman knocked on both doors and you never answered. You admitted to our office when you called that maybe you didn’t hear him knocking. You failed to pay the invoice for your shed repair. We charged you a minimum service charge to do a simple repair, we did not contract with you to replace rotten wood in your shed as comment infers.

My experience with John McClung roofing was not good. where do I start with complaints. They damaged one of by two sun tunnels installing my roof. Took them 4 or 5 trips to my house after roof was installed and my kitchen ceiling was stained from the leaking to determine that they had cracked one of the sun tunnels. they agreed to replace the damaged sun tunnel but it would not match the the other sun tunnel, which is on the front side of my house so I had to pay the $500 to replace the unbroken one. They did come in and repainted my kitchen and living room ceilings after the leak was finally fix about 6 months later.I have been getting a lot of dead insects inside one of the sun tunnels and come to find out they broke one of the interior lens must be when they installed them. They had to know that they broke it a huge chunk was missing from the interior lens. I just found that out today. They also installed my gutters through a subcontractor and you talk about a mess. The contractor worked a week on them and decided he was done and never finished the job. Gutter on front of the house was slopping the wrong direction and leaks, too this day still leaks. they came back a number of times to fix them, gutter drains better but still leaks. I had drainage piping for the down spouts contractor never put the downspouts into the drainage piping just let the water run on the ground. He cut holes in my deck twice the size needed for the downspouts. I'm sorry but I have not had a very good experience with this roofing company.

Terrible work. Put on a different brand shingle than they told me they would. Bent my gutter, broke a roof truss (slamming down a bundle of shingles on the roof) and now my living room ceiling sags. Big dips in the driveway because a heavy truck parked on it to unload materials. They should have used a truck w/ a mule on the back to bring the shingles up to the roof. Then when the truck left, the driver ran over a 15 year old patch of blue rug juniper that was beautiful. He broke all the juniper and killed it. The roof leaked in one of my bathrooms. (John came and fixed that) I repainted the ceiling in the bathroom. Then John wanted to do the roof over, but wanted me to use architectural shingles and not the 3 tab shingles I wanted. I live in a mobile home and architectural shingles wouldn't look right. It's easy to use arch shingles to hide an inferior crews ability to do a good job, they don't snap lines and keep the joints tight. And the seams of the shingles won't line up. One of my friends said " that's an Army roof" I said "what" He said "look at those seams, left right left right" He claims to be a christian. (I read the other reviews too) And will talk bible and God w/ you too. He goes to Biltmore Baptist Church. My experience with people from that church over a 25 year period (that's how long I've lived in AVL) is less than good. Lets just leave it at that. He claims to love God, He did not act "God like" in the end. My roof looks worse than it did before they started. Very self serving. More than likely he feels "right" w/ God.

Rick Howland hired us to install a new roof system for him, which we installed on or about July 14, 2014. He wanted 3-tab 25 year shingles instead of the superior 30-year architectural shingle roof system most people are using today. He chose the IKO Charcoal Grey 3-tab shingle from IKO sample boards, which we subsequently installed. A 3-tab roof system is very flat and reflects any imperfections and irregularities in the decking below. Mr. Howland's roof was no exception. We did repair a leak around his plastic bubble skylight, which doesn't incorporate step flashing, or any flashing at all besides caulking. I recommended installing Velux tempered glass skylights, as they are a much superior product, but he declined at that time. Upon completion of his new roof system, Mr. Howland paid $3000 of his $5900 bill and said that was all he was going to pay. That's all we collected. Fast forward to 7/12/18, when Mr. Howland called our office. He wanted the Velux skylights installed at this time, plus agreed to pay us the unpaid balance of his original roof if we would replace his roof system with an architectural shingle roof system. We agreed that for the sum of $686.97 for the skylights and $2900 for the unpaid balance from the original re-roof we would move forward. On 10/4/18, I spoke with Mr. Howland, who said that he wasn't sure he had funds available for his skylights. I asked him if he had the funds to pay off his unpaid balance upon completion of the job and he said no, that he wasn't going to pay me for the second roof either. I explained to him that I couldn't be the only one expected to keep my word in our agreement, and he insisted he wasn't going to pay, so I immediately cancelled both his shingle order and skylight order. All has been quiet until this review.

We were referred to McClung by our realtor James Lockwood. We needed a new roof for a house my wife and I just purchased. I contacted McClung and a sales member (Michael) came out a few days later. I’ll start by saying the salesperson was not just giving his pitch/spiel. We never felt pressured like with other companies. He was super friendly and honest and gave us straight up answers about any concerns we had. As soon as he left we decided to sign the contract and move forward. The quote they gave us also seemed very fair! They got us on the schedule about 3 weeks later and the roof only took about 5-6 hours from start to finish. The crew worked efficiently and they cleaned up after themselves. We couldn’t be happier with the end result! The new roof looks awesome and I would 10/10 recommend McClung to anyone looking to have roofing services done to their house!

My roof sustained hail damage last year and the insurance adjuster said I was covered for a new roof. Everyone I dealt with at John McClung was great, from the friendly office staff to the crew that actually did the work. When the job turned out to be bigger than anticipated due to unacceptably wide gaps between the boards, they worked with my reluctant insurance company to get the entire job covered, thus saving me a ton of money I'd otherwise be on the hook for. I'm very happy with the result.

Just had a new roof installed and it was done in one day! We were kept informed along each step of the process. We give John McClung roofing our highest rating. From the moment we contacted them, we found courtesy and professionalism. Their crew did excellent work and cleaned up after the job was completed. Their prices were reasonable. Years ago we had a roof leak. The roofing company that installed the roof put us off for weeks. John McClung roofing is definitely a five star operation. After receiving the unfortunate notice from our insurance company that they will no longer insure our roof we had to find a roof replacement. Since we are currently renting out our house in Asheville and live in Pennsylvania, we had to rely on the recommendation of our property manager, Al Sartorelli of Sartorelli Real Estate agency in Asheville. After the job was completed Al inspected the project and said they did a fantastic job. I could not be more pleased with the professionalism and the expertise of handling the coordination of removing the solar panels in a timely manner to get the roof done without losing too much sunshine. I would like to give a shout out to Jo Campbell, Roof coordinator, I really appreciate her Professionalism, efficiency, and kindness.

I was new to Buncombe county and our home needed a new roof. My wife and I made the decision to call John McClung based on the reviews and I just take a moment to pay it forward. This review, is me paying it forward. You need to hire these guys. Derick, Johnny, Bryson… amazing project managers and estimators. Every single one of them would go out of their way to help and make sure your experience went well. Just good people. The metal roof installers were as great as I’ve ever seen. Precision, quality, efficiency. They were done before 3:00 pm even with a lunch break. They worked so fast. Even the back-office accounting employees were kind and wonderful to work with. Enjoy your new roof, and trust the positive reviews for this great WNC business. Hire John McClung.
